The News Journal is looking for a talented Visual Journalist specializing in video to produce and edit video on demand, social media video, mini-documentaries, livestreams, photo stories, galleries and article content for delawareonline.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK websites and social media platforms

The Visual Journalist will be part of the photo/video staff, primarily focusing on Delaware and the Philadelphia region. Their duties will include generating story ideas, writing and voicing scripts, shooting and producing videos, sourcing and integrating video from third parties, maintaining video playlists, and coordinating as needed with colleagues. While the role is primarily focused on video, the right candidate will also be adept at covering breaking news using still photography and/or video.

The Visual Journalist will be responsible for managing their video packages from start to finish, including writing, shooting, editing and formatting for social media. They will report to the photo/video editor and work closely with other editors.

The Visual Journalist should be a proficient video editor and have experience with Adobe Premiere and the Adobe Creative Suite, but also willing to learn and use other company-provided video editing solutions including Wochit.

In this role, you will:

  • Regularly pitch visual or visual/text stories
  • Produce videos, stream live videos and post to social media platforms, as well as create polished, longer-term video projects.
  • Demonstrate high command of techniques and sophisticated craftsmanship in video and photo storytelling.
  • Use social media to share your work and connect with diverse audiences.
  • Create and maintain video playlists
  • Shoot still photo assignments and generate photo galleries as needed.
  • Have ongoing conversations with reporters and editors about stories, video sand photos.
  • Bring ideas for visual coverage to the table for discussion

Industry knowledge:

  • Understanding of social media and how to engage audiences on digital platforms.
  • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
  • Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.
  • Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
  • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
  • Valid driver's license, a car and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • This job includes evening and weekend work.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, Journalism, Communications or Liberal Arts
  • 3+ years professional experience
  • Must have experience with Adobe Premiere and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Must have experience with video production and producing video for digital platforms
  • Must have experience with photojournalism for a news publication, including use of camcorders, DSLR cameras, editing tools and captioning.
  • Must have newsgathering or producing background
  • Must demonstrate an efficient workflow for producing visual content
  • Works collaboratively with a passionate and highly motivated team of videographers, reporters, editors and producers.
  • Confident navigating social media, including writing, scheduling and optimizing posts and able to create video for different platforms
  • Experience producing video for digital platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
