Background

Jewish Federation of San Diego (JFSD) is looking for an educator to teach the lessons of the Holocaust. The primary audience will be high school students; however, they may also teach educators, community members and younger students. This role will be an integral part of the work of the Legacy of Light Goldberg Institute for Holocaust Education (The Institute), a new program within the Jewish Federation of San Diego.

Position Summary

The Field Educator will serve as the primary guide and facilitator of the Institutes Mobile Learning Center, an interactive experience designed to deliver dynamic, innovative, and accessible Holocaust education to schools and community sites by traveling to these locations directly.

The Institutes Mobile Learning Center is scheduled to launch in San Diego in March of 2026. Prior to the community launch, the educator will actively participate in planning, preparation and other critical tasks to ensure a successful launch.

This role requires excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal abilities, comfort with technology, and a love of teaching. The educator should be a confident presenter, an agile troubleshooter, and a passionate ambassador for Holocaust education. Training will be provided in all aspects of the Mobile Learning Center, and technical support will be available through partner vendors. This position also involves working closely with a growing team, including contributing to special projects as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position is as Field Educator of the Institutes Mobile Learning Center. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the continued successful operation of the Mobile Learning Center by supporting communication with partners, reporting on interactions, and managing maintenance and ongoing development.

• Facilitate Mobile Learning experiences by:
  • Guiding students, teachers, and the public through interactive experiences at the Mobile Learning Center and ensuring meaningful educational experiences.
  • Utilizing digital education tools and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Serving as the primary contact for teachers, volunteers and docents.
  • Setting up the learning center and materials, including care and handling of historical artifacts.
• Communicate with educators before and after visits to support pre- and post-visit activities as well as planning for day-of site visit(s).
• Recruit and manage volunteers/docents, and train Institute staff who support the Mobile Learning Center.
• Coordinate the Mobile Learning Centers upkeep and transportation between locations and track related expenses.
• Ensure that impact evaluation tools (e.g. surveys, questionnaires) are utilized and completed by partners.
• Support marketing and development by gathering promotional material (e.g., photos, quotes, stories.)
• Collaborate with team members to contribute to the advancement of the Mobile Learning Center.
• Take on special assignments and contribute flexibility to the Institutes mission and success.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

• Min. 5 years of experience in high school education required. Experience in Holocaust education preferred.
• Engaging and empathetic educator with a proven ability to connect with youth audiences, respond thoughtfully to challenging questions, and navigate diverse attitudes and perspectives. Additionally, must have the ability to foster safe and supportive learning environments around sensitive content.
• Skilled in community engagement, including outreach, partnership-building, and relationship management, including with teachers, administrators, donors and other stakeholders.
• Strong communicator and collaborator, skilled in public speaking, group facilitation, and team coordination.
• Tech-savvy and enthusiastic about using digital tools to enhance educational experiences.
• Highly organized, reliable, and detail-oriented. Demonstrated success managing multiple priorities, deadlines, and logistics and committed to delivering high-quality, impactful programming.
• Familiar with program evaluation, including feedback collection and impact reporting tools.
• Valid drivers license and clean driving record, with the ability to operate a Mercedes Sprinter Van. Coordinate maintenance and repairs to ensure the smooth operation of the Sprinter Van.
• Willing and able to travel locally and occasionally regionally, as needed. Estimated travel is 90-100%.

Education

• Bachelors degree required, ideally in a field relevant to Holocaust education for grades 6-12. (e.g., Jewish Studies, Holocaust Studies, Religious Studies).
• A valid California teaching credential is not required but is desired.
• A masters degree is preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish desired but not required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This job will require traveling all around San Diego with the Mobile Learning Center. The employee must occasionally crouch, stoop, or reach. The employee must have the ability to travel with the Mobile Learning Center and work early mornings, weekends and evenings when needed.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position, working mostly in schools, public spaces and other locations mostly in San Diego. When not actively educating students, this position will work from the Jewish Federation office in San Diego.

Compensation range: $70,000-85,000 per year, with a generous benefits plan, retirement plan and comprehensive paid sick leave, vacation and up to 22 paid holidays per year.
