Summary
A pipefitter is responsible for planning and installing all piping systems, pipe supports, and hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for our commercial and industrial building projects. Experience in welding, joining, and installing a variety of piping systems for water distribution and waste water disposal, as well as installing manual and electric safety valves is required. Installation of pipe for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems is typical in this position.
Pipefitters work in cooperation with other trades and laborers to ensure that all specifications, legislation and policies are met, to ensure efficient completion of any project. Providing adequate services, by a qualified pipefitter, will ensure that all water supply networks and waste and drainage systems are installed, repaired and maintained to meet all standards of building codes and safety.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Oversee and supervise project progress and provide reports on timeline, progress, and adjustments to job site manager.
2. Order, invoice, and manage materials and equipment.
3. Ensure all legal requirements, building and safety codes, safety inspections, city guidelines, and local and state regulations are met.
4. Configure pipe systems blueprint and plan piping systems layouts.
5. Ensure all steam water, chemicals, or other liquids are turned off before working on piping system.
6. Precisely cut, bend, and weld metals such as carbon and stainless steel.
7. Clean and clear debris and hazardous materials from pipes as needed.
8. Install piping or tubing segments securely with welding or other equipment.
9. Thread, weld, solder piping together.
10. Consult with job site management for hole placements in walls and bulkheads.
11. Ensure pipe sizes, hangers, supports, and joint needs for accurate flow.
12. Cut and alter piping to ensure correct sizes.
13. Perform trial runs and tests on pipe systems.
14. Repair and reinforce broken, cracked, or inadequate systems or pipes.
Minimum Job Requirements
• High school degree or equivalent educational experience; vocational school or trade apprenticeship required.
• Certification by NCCER or union 72 membership; must meet all state licensure requirements.
• Membership in labor union United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing, Pipefitting and Sprinkler Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada preferred.
• Five years’ experience as a pipefitter preferred.
• Able to manage team members and multiple projects.
• Accurate and precise attention to detail.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal building code regulations with regard to piping systems.
• Mig and Tig welding on various piping systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
• Pipefitting installation, maintenance, and repair skills.
• Knowledge of steam, water, and natural gas distribution systems maintenance and repair.
• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
• Ability to read, understand, and follows safety procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position Requires: a) Estimate jobs, layout and material selection; b) Interpret pipefitting/plumbing and mechanical system building prints; c) Lead troubleshooting and repair efforts on steam, water, gas distribution system components and backflow prevention devices; d) Troubleshoot sewage systems; e) Lead junior technicians in complex repair work.
Conditions of Employment
• Possession of a valid driver's license is a requirement for this job.
• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
• This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the LU 72 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
• Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
• Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.

• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
