Position Summary:
The Employee Health Nurse provides nursing care/health services/health education and guidance for all Ottumwa Regional Health employees through a comprehensive program that includes first aid, care and assistance to employees who become ill or are injured at work; immunizations/ inoculations to prevent spread of communicable diseases and monitoring employee health. Responsibilities also include activities and oversight functions for the random drug screening program, worker’s compensation, return to work fitness for duties, and also participates on the Ottumwa Regional Health Center’s Safety Committee.
- Performs and oversees selected administrative functions of employee health activities for the hospital and assists People Services with Worker’s compensation/on the job injuries.
- Identifies and facilitates employment options to meet the healthcare needs of the employee complying with Workers Compensation, ADA, and FMLA.
- Knowledge of activity restrictions appropriate to the severity of injury or illness.
- Process timely all employee injuries and files appropriate workers compensation claims and completes applicable OSHA logs.
- Interacts professionally with the employee in the formation of a plan of care.
- Collaborates with Occupational Health provider to clear employees who are returning to work from an illness, injury, or leave.
- Works collaboratively with the Infection Control Department, People Services Department, and Risk Management.
- Ensures all pre-employment assessments are completed to include screening, drug test, blood work, tb test, respiratory mask fit, and more.
- Oversees Random Drug Screening process to include but not limited to: notifying employees of selection, completing random drug screening and breath alcohol tests, maintaining random participant list tracker, ensuring documentation compliance, and working closely with the Director of People Services throughout the process.
- Ensures employee immunizations and TB screenings are up-to-date.
- Maintains employee safety as a focus of practice.
- Identifies existing and potential loss sources and facilitates plans for prevention.
- Assists employees as needed with scheduling appointments to maximize employees’ access to health services.
- Triages telephone calls appropriately.
- Provides employees information regarding health services available.
- Responds as the resource person for employee health and development of employee health policies, procedures and practices.
- Investigates, creates solutions, works on committees and help as a consultant regarding all health issues.
- Maintain literary resources of standards, legislation, tests and journals related to employee health.
- Accesses most current periodicals and literature to keep abreast of the new and changing regulations regarding employee health, infection control and employee safety.
- Presents employee health requirements for all new employees at Orientation. Offers employee health education to all employees annually.
- Recommends interventions to prevent spread of infectious disease among employees. Promotes use of standard precautions.
- Coordinates and oversees employee care post exposure treatment. Assures that on-the-job injury procedures are followed.
- Coordinates return to duty program with Human Resources and/or Department Directors.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records, reports and follow-up.
- Coordinates and reports employee health and safety activities to the Risk Management Director.
- Maintains required records of employee infections, reportable diseases, back injuries, needle sticks, exposure, etc. Maintains up-to-date employee health records.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Ensure all processes comply with OSHA, and state and federal laws. Follow CDC recommendations for employee health immunization schedule.
- Participates in orientation for new hires.
- Organizes and presents in-services and continuing education based on need.
- Promotes and coordinates (in conjunction with infection preventionist and occupational medicine) annual flu immunization program and annual mask fit program for employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of current state, federal, and local laws and regulations governing employee healthcare needs.
- Ability to report appropriate reporting mechanisms as required by state laws and insurance programs
- Able to compile employee data and prepare outcome analysis and shares with management team.
- Able to maintain a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Effective Communicator. Must be able to communicate appropriately and clearly to staff and physicians
- Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures for employee health.
EDUCATION
- Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3 years RN experience
- Minimum of 1 year experience in health and/or occupational medicine preferred
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE
- Registered Nurse in state of Iowa or multistate license granting the ability to work in the state of Iowa
- BLS
- Mandatory Reporter
