Crownpoint is in McKinley County, New Mexico, founded in 1912. The population was 2,278 at the 2010 census. It is on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways. The Trail of the Ancients is a scenic route to prehistoric archaeological and geological sites of northwestern New Mexico, providing insight into the lives of the Ancient Puebloan, Navajo, Ute, and Apache peoples. The area features canyons, volcanic rock formations, and sandstone buttes, with several scenic and wilderness areas offering recreational opportunities.

Founded in 1912 by Samuel F. Stacher as an Indian Agency serving the Navajo People, Crownpoint developed with a schoolhouse, agency office, and power house to support future establishments.

Crownpoint Health Care Facility

This facility serves a population of 200,000 Navajo residents. The staff includes primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners at a 32-bed hospital. The daily inpatient load is nine; outpatient visits average 151 per day; annual OB cases are 275; and annual ER cases number about 18,000 (6 ED beds).

Responsibilities

The emergency physician shall provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of patients presenting to the CHCF-ED. This includes patients referred by other medical providers within the Crownpoint Healthcare Facility system (outpatient clinics, outlying clinics, ED fast track, inpatient units, etc.).

The physician shall offer professional advice regarding patient management to other CHCF providers and manage patients in the fast track section of the ED. The scope includes a range of emergency care typical for rural civilian practice, such as:

• Major trauma (fractures, stab wounds, open chest/abdomen wounds, head trauma, suspected spinal injuries, lacerations, amputations)
• Major medical emergencies (cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, shock)
• Obstetrical emergencies (deliveries, pregnancy complications, vaginal bleeding)
• Pediatric emergencies (neonatal resuscitations)
• Acute psychiatric issues (suicide attempts)
• Lower-acuity complaints (viral illnesses, minor orthopedic issues, minor trauma, alcohol-related issues)
• Other medical problems, both acute and chronic.
