The Prince Georges County Office of the States Attorney has an opening for a part-time Legal Assistant. The principal function of this employee is to perform a variety of tasks under the general direction and support of States Attorneys, or upper-level management team. A significant aspect of this work involves working effectively and tactfully with people from all socio-economic backgrounds. This position is a permanent part-time exempt position, which means the legal assistant is a political appointment and serves at the pleasure of the States Attorney.

SALARY: $50,000.00 ($24.04/hour) - $55,000.00 ($26.44/hour) (Commensurate with experience)

TYPICAL DUTIES:

The Legal Assistant will work with Assistant States Attorneys to perform a full range of legal support activities. The ideal candidate will have the ability to pay strong attention to detail; have strong criminal legal research and writing skills; as well as strong organizational skills.

Typical duties include: Assist with the preparation and filing of motions, notices, memoranda, pleadings and other related legal documents; Gathers information from and updates information in judicial/criminal databases and tracking systems; Conducts research and analyzes data such as statutes, decisions legal articles and codes; Prepares documents from gathered information to be used at all stages of prosecution; Assists in obtaining information from law enforcement or other parties for use in preparing cases before trial; Runs preliminary record and history checks on identified individuals; Regularly communicates with defense attorneys, law enforcement, victims and witnesses related to the cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION FOR CANDIDATES:

Bachelors degree strongly preferred; High school or equivalent; Microsoft Office; Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with people; Uses diplomacy and discretion in performing assigned Office duties.
