Job Description
What we do: We are a consulting firm, established in 1974, specializing in providing scientific expertise in a litigation setting, specifically in the field of personal injury. We serve as expert witnesses specializing in reconstruction, human factors and biomechanics. We provide our opinions based on scientific and engineering principles, and provide sworn oral testimony. Our clients include, but not limited to: insurance companies, law firms hired by insurance companies, attorneys who represent plaintiffs (injured party), and criminal defense attorneys.
Broad overview of your role: As an assisting engineer, after the initial training, depending on cases you are assigned to, you will be responsible for reviewing documents provided by our client, which may include, but not limited to: deposition transcripts of individuals pertaining to the case, surveillance footages, photographs, medical records of plaintiff. Incident location and/or objects involved in the incident will be inspected to gather the necessary information for reconstruction (depending on the role that you are assigned to, be comfortable with up to 90% field work and 10% desk work). You will calculate the necessary values related to vehicle collisions, using conservation of momentum/energy and kinematic equations. For premises liability cases, calculation of the impact speed of a falling object, measurements of the incident location using a measuring tape or a tribometer. You will then communicate our opinions regarding reconstruction, human factors and biomechanics via telephone, and if needed, prepare an expert report to be presented as a legal document.
Requirements:
Education: BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, civil, electrical, material science, chemical and biomedical engineering, and physics. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DON'T HAVE AT A MINIMUM A BACHELOR SCIENCE.
Soft skills: Must be able to think critically and creatively. Be prepared to take the initiative to follow up with clients regarding missing documents and inspection of relevant items. Must be fully comfortable making phone calls to clients and receiving phone calls rather than sending emails. Preference will be given to those who are hands-on and are able to travel to object/site inspections. Must be able to handle criticisms from others and willing to ask for help. Very strong oral/written communication skills will be essential for this job. Expect to see a graphic content associated with criminal and wrongful death cases.
**You will always be required to do self-learning as you grow as a professional; for example, we do not expect you to be versed in a litigation setting and the laws from the beginning; we will provide training in that regard, but it will ultimately be up to you to do legal research on your own, ask others.
Benefits:
18 days of PTO, company contribution to medical insurance, company matched 401k after one year of employment, opportunities for hybrid/remote work.
