Position Overview

As a Fingerprint Technician Trainee on an indeterminate shift for the Division of Justice Services; receives formal classroom training consisting of lectures, visual aids and reading of assigned references relative to recognition and explanation of basic fingerprint patterns; classification and identification of fingerprint patterns. Under progressively increased autonomy, performs visual check for quality purposes to verify all required data is present and fingerprint images are ABIS acceptable; sets core and axis, file and retrieve fingerprint cards within the master fingerprint file; contacts live scan agencies via the telephone for problems or re-submission of fingerprint images; utilizes the CHRI computer terminal to confirm correct completion of fingerprint card submissions based on the event status; utilize the CHRI computer to confirm accuracy of transcripts based on previous identifications; performs processing of fingerprint card submissions submitted via live scan equipment or manual submission to the Bureau of Identification; visual check for quality purposes, to verify all data is present and fingerprint images are AFIS acceptable.

Essential Functions

  • Under immediate supervision, for a period of six to twelve months, participates in an agency sponsored training program.
  • Receives work assignments of increasing complexity and difficulty to develop knowledge, understanding and technical skills necessary to function as a proficient Fingerprint Technician.
  • Utilizes personal computer for access to email, fax server and Internet for required bureau business.
  • Utilizes a selection menu via a PC monitor.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers two (2) years proficiency following oral and written instruction.
  • Prefers one (1) year work experience in a technical oriented position.
  • Prefers two (2) years computer and keyboard experience.
  • Prefers one (1) year experience utilizing database software. 

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass a background check, drug test and fingerprinting.
  • Requires the ability to complete 6-12 months training and pass exam at end of training period in order to promote into the Fingerprint Technician title.
