The purpose of the position is to assist project managers and other technical office staff in the development of water resources projects and to provide meaningful work experience to engineering/environmental students in a job closely related to their field of study.
On a given day, you'll:
- Works under the direct supervision of engineering staff.
- provide field assistance during wetland delineations, sediment sampling and hydrosurveys, and on-call construction observation roles (not expected to be more than two consecutive days on a construction site).
- Use your knowledge of plant identification, hydric soils, wetland hydrology indicators
- Learn to independently collect field survey data using a handheld GPS.
- Assist with report writing to document field observations, collect desktop study data.
- Prepare technical reports required by the project scope.
Required Qualifications & Physical Requirements
- Valid Driver's license and good driving record required
- Completed college level coursework in plant identification and soil classification.
- Strong written/verbal communications skills and the ability to operate independently.
- Regular lifting, carrying material or equipment of moderate weight (of 50 pounds or less).
- Occasionally lift equipment of moderate weight in and out of vehicle or overhead.
- Occasionally push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop and climb ladders.
- Occasionally work in environments with extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
- Occasionally work on water within boat or while wearing waders.
- Occasionally longer field days over 8 hours.
- Occasionally overnight stays in a hotel.
- Frequently walk over uneven, wet terrain and challenging fauna / flora habitats.
Desired Education and Experience
- Currently working towards a degree in soil science, conservation, or related field.
- Experience in soil judging.
- Willingness to attend UW-La Crosse Wetland Training Workshop (June 2025).
- Experience in ArcGIS and AutoCAD.
- WDNR or NASBLA Boaters Certification.
